Sea levels rising on US East Coast much faster than global average

U.S. Geological Survey scientists call the 600-mile (965-kilometer) swath a "hot spot" for climbing sea levels caused by global warming. Along the region, the Atlantic Ocean is rising at an annual rate three times to four times faster than the global average since 1990, according to the study published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

It's not just a faster rate, but at a faster pace, like a car on a highway "jamming on the accelerator," said the study's lead author, Asbury Sallenger Jr., an oceanographer at the agency. He looked at sea levels starting in 1950, and noticed a change beginning in 1990.

Since then, sea levels have gone up globally about 2 inches (5 centimeters). But in Norfolk, Virginia, where officials are scrambling to fight more frequent flooding, sea level has jumped a total of 4.8 inches (12.19 centimeters), the research showed. For Philadelphia, levels went up 3.7 inches (9.4 centimeters), and in New York City, it was 2.8 inches (7.11 centimeters).

Climate change pushes up sea levels by melting ice sheets in Greenland and west Antarctica, and because warmer water expands.

Computer models long have projected higher levels along parts of the East Coast because of changes in ocean currents from global warming, but this is the first study to show that's already happened.

By 2100, scientists and computer models estimate that sea levels globally could rise as much as 3.3 feet (1.01 meters). The accelerated rate along the East Coast could add about 8 inches (20 centimeters) to 11 inches (28 centimeters) more, Sallenger said.

"Where that kind of thing becomes important is during a storm," Sallenger said. That's when it can damage buildings and erode coastlines.

On the West Coast, a National Research Council report released Friday projects an average 3-foot (nearly 1-meter) rise in sea level in California by the year 2100, and 2 feet (0.61 meters) in Oregon and Washington. The land mass north of the San Andreas Fault is expected to rise, offsetting the rising sea level in those two states.

There are no zip code restrictions for players entering grades 7-8 in the fall, so players throughout the city are encouraged to sign up for the SFL Senior Division. Football program: There will be a football program for boys ages 5-12 and a cheerleading program for girls ages 5-13 (as of Aug. 1, 2008). Registration will be at 3410 East T.C. Jester, and all fees are due at sign-up (football annual membership is $35 and participation is $75, and includes pants, jersey, socks & helmet decal; cheerleading annual membership is $35). Regular signups are Thursday from 6-8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon.

Tejas Youth Football: Tejas Youth Football and Cheer registration is now under way for ages 5-12. Applications are being accepted from organizations for the Fall 2008 season.

GOLF

STPGA junior golf programs: The Southern Texas PGA would like to invite junior golfers ages 7-18 to participate in the 2008 STGPA Academy Sports and Outdoors Junior Golf Programs. The programs are as follows

Junior Links Tour: An instructional program for young players (ages 12-18) that may not be ready for 18-hole events.

Bellaire classes: Monthly youth golf classes are offered by the Bellaire Parks and Recreation Department. Sessions cover grip, stroke, stance, putting and more. Call Buster Adams at 713-662-8285 for details.

Parks and Rec program: The Houston Parks and Recreation Department invites boys and girls ages 7-18 to participate in its year-round junior golf program. The program offers a total of eight, two-week sessions of golf instruction at neighborhood parks across the city. Students will receive free equipment and lessons from PGA professionals. Beginner lessons: Pinewood Golf Center offers group and individual golf lessons led by teaching golf professional Gordon Ducoff. The center is off Sam Houston Toll Road.

GYMNASTICS

PROGRAMS

Quillian Center: The Quillian Center, a recreational division of First Methodist Church at 10570 Westpark Drive, offers youth sports programs in basketball, baseball (Tee-ball), soccer and flag football. West U summer camps: The City of West University Place Parks and Recreation Department is offering a variety of camp opportunities for ages 2-14 all summer long. Youth can choose from any of the following camp options: Dance Camp, Camp Colonial, Racquet Camp, John Lucas Basketball Camp, Racquet and More Camp, Skyhawks Sports Camps, and Swim Clinic Camp. In addition to the traditional camp offerings, West U Parks and Recreation is also offering a few new camp opportunities this summer, including Adrenaline Rush Camp, Art Exploration Camp, Ikids Computer Camp, and a new Smart Cooking Camp. RUGBY

Wanderers: The Wanderers Rugby Football Club seeks players. Practices, which are open to anyone, are held Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 p.m., rain or shine, at the Westbury High School football field. Cleats and shorts are necessary. Houston Hurricanes play: The Houston Hurricanes play touch rugby Sundays from 3-5 p.m. at the Northwest YMCA, 1234 W. 34th St. The games are played under the Federation of International Touch rules. Tournaments and leagues are also held. Individual players ages 8 and over are welcome; no experience necessary. Training is Mondays from 6-7 p.m.; Saturday games are 10-11 a.m.

SOCCER

FFPS Soccer: Fall Registration for Fun Fair Positive Soccer is now open for the fall for boys and girls, ages 4-18. Games begin Oct. 11. All FFPS games are played locally, and practices are once per week, with a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal playing time, opportunities to play every position, coed/balanced teams, positive coaching and more. No tryouts are required. Founded in 1986, FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater Houston area.

Near Town Soccer registration: Registration is open for youth soccer players interested in playing for the Houston Near Town Soccer Club, which includes recreational West University Soccer and Houston Express Soccer. The Club expects to field approximately 1,800 players on more than 175 teams for the 2008 fall season. Comprehensive programs are available for boys and girls ages 5-18 regardless of experience or playing level, from beginners and recreational players through Division I.

Homeschooler soccer: Kicks Indoor Soccer & Gym, 611 Shepherd Drive, offers a soccer program dedicated to homeschooled youth ages 2-17 every Wednesday. Large family and group discounts are available.

KiCKS KiDS soccer training: Kicks Indoor Soccer offers year-round training for children ages 2-17. Children can walk in for a single class or sign up for any program and start at any time. Every class is age-appropriate, managed by licensed soccer trainers. The full KiCKS KiDS schedule is Mondays from 4-5 p.m. for ages 2-4; Mondays from 5-6 p.m. for ages 7-11; Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. for ages 12-17; Thursdays from 5-6 p.m. for ages 4-6; and Fridays from 9:30-10:30 a.m for ages 2-4. On Mommy & Me Fridays, there is open play on the indoor turf field with other parents and their young ones every Friday afternoon from 4-5:30 p.m. for $5 per child. Finally, there is Friday night open play for adult coed competition from 11 p.m.-1 a.m. for $10 per player.

Recreational ball: Girls ages 5-15 can register to play recreational softball at Memorial Ashford. Most games are scheduled for after school at the park located at 12840 Briar Forest.
