Woman who fled Iraq suffers brutal end in US

EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) ? Shaima Alawadi and her family fled Iraq nearly two decades ago as Saddam Hussein crushed a Shiite uprising, settling in the U.S. so they would no longer face persecution, a family friend said.

Alawadi, 32, grew up in the country's largest Iraqi enclaves, wore the Muslim headscarf and volunteered at the mosque.

Now, after her body was found severely beaten in her suburban San Diego home, police, the FBI and members of the Iraqi community are wondering whether her death was a hate crime or something else.

Among the evidence that police have collected is a threatening note that was near Alawadi's body. Her daughter told a television station that it said: "Go back to your country, you terrorist."

El Cajon Police Chief James Redman declined to discuss the contents of the note Monday, though he said that it has led police to regard the killing as a possible hate crime. He said he was confident the case would be solved.

"I want to stress there is other evidence in this case that we are looking at and the possibility this is a hate crime is just one aspect," Redman said.

"We don't have tunnel vision on this case," he said. "We're looking at the big picture."

Redman said he was confident it was an isolated incident but would not say why.

The death rippled across the world, with Alawadi's name being mentioned on Twitter and the case being discussed in Iraqi communities in the San Diego and Detroit suburbs. Lawmakers in Baghdad called for a full investigation.

Her slaying was being compared to that of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed Florida teen shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer, said Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

"Trayvon was black wearing a hoodie. Shaima was wearing a hijab," Walid said, referring to the Muslim headscarf. "It's the same racist principle at play that killed both of these individuals."

Others were more guarded, saying they wanted to wait for the investigation to unfold.

"It is absolutely devastating for the family and the community, so we need move on very, very cautiously. Emotions are high, but we need to make sure we let the professionals do what they need to do," said Hanif Mohebi, executive director of CAIR's San Diego chapter.

The chief said Alawadi died of severe head trauma. She was taken off life support Saturday, three days after her teenage daughter found her unconscious in the dining room of the family's El Cajon home, east of San Diego.

The victim's daughter, Fatima Al Himidi, told KUSI-TV in San Diego that her mother had been beaten on the head repeatedly with a tire iron, and the threatening note was next to her. Police would not confirm the type of weapon used in the attack.

Police said the family found another threatening note within the last month but did not report it to authorities. Mohebi said family members told him they dismissed the initial note as a prank.

The victim and her family fled Iraq in the early 1990s after a failed Shiite uprising, living in Saudi Arabian refugee camps before coming to the U.S., said Imam Husham Al-Husainy of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center in Dearborn, Mich.

Saddam's troops hanged Alawadi's uncle.

"She lost her uncle by Saddam," he said, "and when they came here to seek freedom, she got killed."

The family arrived in the Detroit area in 1993 and later moved to San Diego. Shaima Alawadi was a religious Shiite Muslim who wore a hijab and volunteered at a mosque, Al-Husainy said.

Alawadi's father, Sayed Nabeel Alawadi, is a cleric in Iraq, said Al-Husainy, who described himself as a close family friend.

Hayder Al-Zayadi, a family friend, told the Detroit Free Press that Alawadi's brothers worked for the U.S. Army, serving as cultural advisers to train soldiers who were going to be deployed to the Middle East.

Another family friend told U-T San Diego that Alawadi's husband had a similar job. Redman said Alawadi's husband was currently on disability and didn't know his previous employment.

Flowers were set on the doorstep of the home Monday. One of the glass panels on a sliding back patio door was boarded up with wood. The backyard overlooks a middle school.

Alvin Luckenbach, who lives next door, exchanged pleasantries with Alawadi and her husband. He said she recently apologized for her kids making noise playing basketball on Alawadi's back patio.

"They were always nice," Luckenbach said.

The Iraqi foreign minister said Monday that Alawadi's body will be flown to Iraq.

The FBI, which is assisting El Cajon police in the investigation, defines a hate crime as an offense motivated by a bias against race, religion, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation. There were 1,409 hate crimes nationwide based on religion during 2010, including 186 targeting Muslims. There were 1,040 based on ethnicity or national origin, including 359 targeting groups other than Hispanics.

U.S. Senator John McCain, one of the leading voices for military intervention, has been a leading voice for military action.

"What I am calling for is for a coalition -- not the United States by itself -- but a coalition, of like-minded countries, including some Middle Eastern countries, like Qatar, UAE, and others, joining together and bringing air power to bear," McCain argues, "because that is the only way you can stop this tanks and artillery. The massacre goes on and it is an unfair fight."

The Syrian National Council -- the umbrella organization for the Syrian opposition -- has called for countries to arm the resistance. No government has yet publicly agreed to do so, but Saudi Arabia and Qatar have called it an excellent idea.

At the heart of the "pro" argument is the idea of a moral imperative to defend human rights.

Chris Bellamy, a professor at the Greenwich Maritime Institute in England, says the idea that humanitarian concerns override sovereignty has grown since the 1990s, when the UN intervened in Bosnia.

"In more recent years, there have been a number of interventions by coalitions which are not UN-run and which may or may not be mandated by UN resolution," Bellamy says. "And clearly those advocating intervention in Syria will be basing the case for it on that platform."

But those calling for military inference in Syria may face an uphill battle.

In the United States, which spurred NATO to take action in Bosnia and Kosovo, the public is weary of conflicts after Iraq and Afghanistan.

In Europe, London has only called the Syrian opposition the "legitimate representative" of the Syrian people, while France, which spearheaded the Libyan intervention, opposes arming the resistance.

Still, the pro argument may gain ground in the months ahead.

If the bloodshed in Syria keeps mounting, it could create the same kind of snowball effect that led NATO -- initially opposed to intervention -- to reverse course and enforce a UN mandate to protect civilians by bombing longtime Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi's forces.

CON

Those arguing against military intervention in Syria worry it could have unpredictable consequences.

"People who urge military action have to understand that before you take that step, you'd better understand where this kind of action leads," U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Alhurra on March 16.

As in Libya, there is fear that arming unknown fighters could lead to a full-blown civil war.

But there is also the larger worry that Western military intervention would threaten President Bashar al-Assad's allies -- Iran, Russia, and China -- and lead to a proxy conflict.

Shahshank Joshi, a political expert with the Royal United Services Institute, says Russia, which considers Syria its foothold in the Mideast, presents a particular danger.

"The concern is that at the end of the day, the Russians can provide very sophisticated equipment that would make any military intervention prohibitively costs -- and they already have been providing certain forms of antiaircraft missiles, and it wouldn't take very much for that to make an intervention almost unthinkable," Joshi says. "So in terms of the proxy war, the concern is whether you would really face a situation where the Syrian state would have a fallback option such that it could never really be completely shattered."

Moscow has called demands for regime change "risky recipes of geopolitical engineering which can only result in further conflict." China has said it is against "interference in internal affairs in the name of humanitarianism."

No government yet has called for military intervention in Syria. Instead, the focus remains on sanctions and diplomatic pressure.

On March 21, the UN Security Council agreed to back UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan for Syria. The plan calls for a cease-fire, political dialogue between government and opposition, and full access for aid agencies.

HP combines printer, PC units in turnaround effort

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hewlett-Packard Co. is combining its printer and PC divisions as it tries to overcome dragging profits, growing competition and the lack of clear identity.

The move announced Wednesday will help the company streamline its business and save money to invest in growing areas. HP, a Silicon Valley pioneer, is hoping a renewed focus on innovation will re-establish the 73-year-old company as a technology trailblazer

"We have got to place a few bets where we can fundamentally change the name of the game," HP CEO Meg Whitman told shareholders Wednesday at the company's annual meeting in Santa Clara, Calif. The Associated Press monitored a webcast of the meeting.

Whitman said printing remains one of the areas where HP can still make its mark. First, though, she said the company needs to trim its expenses, describing the combination of the PC and printing division as a "perfect example" of her streamlining plans.

"We are going to have to save to get growth going again at HP," Whitman told shareholders.

Wednesday's restructuring is one of the first major steps that Whitman, formerly eBay Inc.'s chief, has taken since she took the top job at HP in September. Her predecessor, Leo Apotheker, had wanted to sell or spin off the PC business, a plan that contributed to his ouster after 11 months on the job. Under Whitman, HP decided to keep the unit after all.

The change comes as sales of printers and ink, once HP's lifeblood, are falling because people are sharing more documents and photos online instead of printing them.

HP, the world's No. 1 maker of personal computers, is also coping with declining PC sales as consumers in the U.S. and Western Europe delay replacing their machines and spend money instead on smartphones and tablet computers such as Apple's iPad.

Whitman inherited a faltering company that's facing growing competition from mobile devices and internal operational challenges such as a complex supply chain, which HP hopes to simplify by combining the divisions. While HP's revenue has been falling, the company's expenses have been rising ? an imbalance that Whitman is scrambling to fix.

Echoing remarks that she made to analysts last month, Whitman told shareholders Wednesday that it may take several years to clean up the mess.

Investors already have been growing impatient as HP has been eclipsed by neighboring tech companies such as Apple Inc., whose founder, Steve Jobs, briefly worked at HP in the 1970s

One investor who addressed Whitman expressed his frustration over the divergent fortunes of Apple and HP. Apple's market value has soared by more than $500 billion during the past decade while HP's has climbed by about $10 billion.

Besides combining the PC and printing units, Whitman is unifying HPs marketing functions under one executive and consolidating other areas of its business. She told shareholders that the company can reduce its roughly $4 billion marketing budget without hurting the HP brand.

Whitman hopes to reduce the internal complexity that she believes is making the company slow to adapt to customer demands and changing technology. On Wednesday, the company stressed that the changes will mean a more streamlined, faster and consumer-focused Hewlett-Packard, one that fits its mantra, "One HP."

The company expects to increase productivity and efficiency in PCs and printing, while streamlining customer support and the company's supply chain.

Shaw Wu, senior technology analyst at Sterne Agee, said he believes there's room to cut expenses, particularly in administration and marketing.

But he warned that savings may be limited. Customers don't necessarily want to buy computers and printers at the same time. People replace PCs much quicker than printers, which can last five years or longer.

HP didn't say how much it will save or what effect the restructuring would have on jobs, but the move is likely to result in layoffs. In a 2009 shake-up of the printing, PC and other divisions, HP cut 4,400 jobs. The company had 349,600 workers as of October, the end of its most recent fiscal year.

Whitman will have plenty of choices as she decides where to invest the company's savings, said Forrester analyst Frank Gillett said. For one, HP has been investing in thinner, lighter laptop computers known as ultrabooks ? devices that are easy to hold like tablets yet more powerful in sporting regular keyboards and the ability to run programs side by side on the same screen.

Gillett also believes there's room for innovation in printing as the way people use printers evolves. He said it'll help to have PC and printer product designers working together.

Though the market might be shrinking, he said, "it's hard to imagine in the next 10 years that we are going to get rid of large, cheap, disposable displays ? i.e. paper."

The combined PC and printing unit will be led by Todd Bradley, 53, the executive vice president of the PC group since 2005. Vyomesh Joshi, the head of the printing group, is retiring after 31 years with HP, with a severance package of about $10.8 million, according to the company's regulatory filings. Joshi also is eligible for retirement benefits valued at nearly $7 million as of Oct. 31.

HP said the restructuring will help improve its branding, a challenge for a massive and storied technology company with a role in everything from computers to consulting. Unlike, say, Apple or IBM Corp., HP lacks an identity that people can associate with it, Wu said.

Ultimately, HP will have to define the "big picture" of what the company stands for, Wu said. "What is HP?"

Whitman offered this definition at Wednesday's annual meeting: "HP is the world's largest provider of information technology infrastructure, software, services and solutions to individuals and corporations of all sizes. It's simple, it's clear and it doesn't need a lot of explanation."

Toward the end of the meeting, Whitman discovered she had gotten a part of HP's identity wrong. In her prepared remarks, Whitman said the company would be celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2014. A shareholder corrected her during the question-and-answer session, reminding her that HP started in a Palo Alto, Calif. garage in 1939, which would make the company 75-years-old in 2014.

HP, which is still based in Palo Alto, had briefly combined the PC and printing business businesses before, under the leadership of Carly Fiorina. Mark Hurd reversed that when he took over as CEO in 2005, when the printer division was still thriving.

The printing and PC units together made up about half of HP's $30 billion revenue in the November-January quarter.

HP's stock fell 52 cents, or 2.2 percent, to close at $23.46 on Wednesday.

Asia stocks lower on signs of slowing China growth

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Wednesday as more evidence of a slowdown in China raised concerns that its economy might not have the momentum needed to help sustain a global recovery.

Benchmark oil extended gains above $106 per barrel while the dollar fell against the euro and the yen.

Worries over the pace of the slowdown in the world's No. 2 economy were fueled by comments Tuesday from mining giant BHP Billiton, which warned that Chinese demand for iron ore ? used to make steel ? was flattening.

In another sign of cooling growth in the world's No. 2 economy, new home prices dropped in 45 Chinese cities in February as the government implemented measures to cool property speculation.

China's economy grew at an annual rate of 8.9 percent in the last three months of 2011, but the government, which wants to reduce reliance on exports and investment, has set a growth target of 7.5 percent this year. The lower growth target has made investors nervous, analysts said.

"The economic growth slowdown in mainland China is still the major concern," said Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities. "The inertia is quite obvious."

In Japan, export-reliant companies like Toyota Motor Corp. felt pressure as the dollar gave up some of its recent gains against the yen. The Nikkei 225 index fell 0.4 percent to 10,099.19.

South Korea's Kospi index dropped 0.6 percent to 2,029.58.

In Australia, where economic growth is tightly bound to sales of its raw materials to China, the S&P/ASX 200 was 0.4 percent lower at 4,256.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.4 percent to 10,092.44 after struggling to hold onto morning gains. Benchmarks in Singapore, mainland China and Taiwan also fell.

Analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said China's growth should remain solid enough to exceed the government's target and "to support the region."

"We believe that China is slowing but the deceleration will continue to be gradual," they said in an email.

The weaker Chinese demand for iron ore hurt some of the region's major steelmakers. Japan's Nippon Steel Corp. slumped 2.1 percent and JFE Holdings Inc. fell 1.8 percent. South Korea's POSCO shed 2.8 percent.

The rising cost of crude is also a threat to the global economic outlook as it could spark inflation and hurt consumer spending. On Tuesday, China raised the price of retail gasoline for the second time in two months.

Japanese exporters fell as the yen nudged up against the greenback. Nissan Motor Corp. lost 2.6 percent and Sony Corp. plunged 3.7 percent. Nikon Corp. fell 2.2 percent.

Heavy equipment makers slid as expectations for stronger global growth faded. Japan's Komatsu Ltd. lost 2.8 percent and South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. shed 2.3 percent.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.5 percent to 13,170.19. The Standard & Poor's 500 eased 0.3 percent to 1,405.52. The Nasdaq composite index slipped 0.1 percent to 3,074.15.

Benchmark crude for May delivery was up 43 cents to $106.50 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2.48 to $105.61 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.

The dollar fell slightly to 83.67 yen from 83.69 yen. Earlier this week, the dollar was as high as 84.17 Japanese yen, its highest point against the yen since April 13.

The euro rose to $1.3274 from $1.3232 late Tuesday in New York.
