Blood spattered on the bricks where Syria bomb falls

AZAZ, Syria (Reuters) - Standing in the wreckage of his home, destroyed in an air strike two hours before, Abu Badri surveyed the damage as relatives scoured the rubble for any valuables they could retrieve.

"We'll have to find a tent to stay in near the border with Turkey. What else can we do?" said the 38-year-old man, walking on a pile of broken concrete under a collapsed roof.

Abu Badri's was one of a cluster of at least six houses destroyed by two bombs dropped on Saturday on Azaz, a rebel-controlled town in northern Syria just beginning to recover from an earlier bombardment by President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

Eleven people were killed in the bombings, according to local activist Abu Zaid, who said he had seen their fresh graves dug in the cemetery nearby - another 11 names to add to the 45,000 reported killed in the 21-month uprising against Assad.

"The number of casualties is unclear - they took some wounded people to Turkey," said a local medic who declined to be named. "We removed four dead children."

Blood was spattered on the bricks that littered the area around the bomb site. A child's teddy bear lay in the wreckage and nearby cars were marked by shrapnel and bullet holes.

A bulldozer cleared the heavy rubble while young boys dug through the debris with their hands, hoping to find people still alive amid the broken bed frames and crushed furniture.

"The bomb fell on top of us," said Abu Badri, wearing a black bomber jacket zipped up against the winter cold. The front door of his home had disappeared and relatives were carrying out a closet door, drinking glasses, a fridge and an oven. He said four children and an elderly man were among the dead.

Neighbors pulled mattresses, carpets and clothes from their homes and packed household items on trucks to take them from their destroyed homes to the next place of refuge.

"This is a residential area," said Ahmed, 30, whose uncle's house was hit in the strike.

"There are civilians - no Free Syria Army," he said, referring to rebel fighters Assad whom has vowed to crush but who now hold large swathes of rural territory across northern Syria, their control curbed only by the president's air power.

"We were sitting inside then suddenly everyone flew all over the place," said a man whose sister's house was hit. "God destroy (Assad) and his home." (Writing by Dominic Evans; Editing by Kevin Liffey)

    Gazprom CNG

    ?

The Gazprom headquarters hosted a working meeting between Vitaly Markelov, Deputy Chairman of the Company?s Management Committee and Heinz Bauer, owner of BAUER COMP.

During the talks the BAUER COMP experts made proposals regarding organizational arrangements for co-production of compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations in Russia.

Following the meeting results, the parties agreed to continue consultations on exploring the possible ways of organizing production of CNG filling stations.

Natural gas use as a motor fuel is rapidly expanding around the world and nowadays involves more than 80 countries. The annual increase in gas-powered vehicle fleet averages 26 per cent. The world?s leading vehicle producers turn out more than 80 models of gas-powered cars. The Russian fleet of gas-powered vehicles numbers some 86 thousand units (global vehicle fleet is comprised of some 15 million units).

Today, 243 compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations are operating in 59 Russian regions, with 208 owned by Gazprom. Besides, a new CNG filling station is being currently built in the Kaliningrad Region.

In 2012, 390 million cubic meters of compressed natural gas are expected to be sold through Russian CNG filling stations, which is 28.4 million cubic meters more than in 2011.

BAUER Compressors produces compressor equipment for CNG filling stations. The BAUER Compressors equipment is installed at the first CNG filling station in the Republic of Gorny Altai.

Strong peso erodes PHL edge in outsourcing industry - GMA Network

A competitive peso is vital to grow the information technology-business process outsourcing industry, the Business Processing Association of the Philippines said Wednesday.

    ?

Citing an analysis by Everest Group and Outsource2Philippines, BPAP president Benedict Hernandez said the impact of a strong peso and in the face of a depreciating Indian rupee has provided India a meaningful cost advantage.

    ?

?With the 30-percent difference in peso and Indian rupee exchange rate with the US dollar, the cost differential has substantially widened,? Hernandez noted, saying the situation is "... much more difficult to manage.?

    ?

In a statement, the industry group said the appreciation of the Philippine peso is eroding the cost competitiveness of the Philippine IT-BPO industry.

    ?

While cost is an important factor for clients outsourcing work to the Philippines, the Philippine IT-BPO industry has traditionally competed for business on the basis of quality of service and productivity, BPAP noted.

    ?

?Quality of service and productivity continue to be at the core of our value proposition. But our industry must also be able to operate within acceptable market prices. That?s becoming increasingly difficult as the peso continues to appreciate," said Hernandez.

    ?

A recent survey of BPAP member companies on the impact of a strong peso showed that 46.7 percent of respondent executives said it has been difficult to hit revenue targets. Respondents also said they had lost some business to other destinations (40 percent) or canceled expansion plans (40 percent). ? VS, GMA News

South Africa: Mandela rests at home

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The doctors treating former South African leader Nelson Mandela believe he should remain in Johannesburg for now to be close to medical facilities that can provide care to the 94-year-old.

Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said Thursday that doctors think it is "necessary and good" that Mandela, who was released from a hospital Wednesday evening, stay in his home in the Johannesburg neighborhood of Houghton.

Maharaj spoke to eNCA, a South African television news channel.

In recent years, Mandela has lived in the village of Qunu in Eastern Cape province, where he grew up. Mandela, a leader of the struggle against apartheid, was admitted Dec. 8 to a hospital, where he was treated for a lung infection and also had a procedure to remove gallstones.

Mastering the Mobile Web: Content, Design, Email, and Sales

?Mobile has really been kicking butt.?

That?s what Neil Patel of Quick Sprout told us when we asked him about the future of the internet. He went on to say:

?It?s going to be more tablet and mobile based in the next few years. We?re going to start seeing a lot less laptops and computers and more and more mobile phones for everything.?

?Want to buy something? Cool. Click a button and it?s charged to your mobile phone.?

Neil?s right:? we asked 20 of the world?s top online entrepreneurs about the trends that would define the future of online business and ?mobile? was the most common answer (online video was #2). If you have a website and you?re not thinking about mobile, then you?re missing out on the biggest thing to happen to the Internet since broadband.

There are now more than 1.2 billion mobile web users worldwide and 25% of US internet users are mobile only. Mobile searches have quadrupled in the last year and this phenomenon is not going away any time soon.

Below, I?ll explain what makes mobile users different based on research from Google Mobile. Then I?ll share the mobile content, design, email marketing, and sales copy strategies that I learned directly from experts like Syed Balkhi and Yanik Silver.

    What You?ll Learn:

    • The browsing habits of mobile users
    • The simple secret to writing mobile content
    • Why responsive web design matters and how to get it
    • The trick to good good mobile sales copy
    • How mobile readers might change your email marketing tactics
All images courtesy of JD Hancock.

Understanding Why the Mobile Web is Different

    Compact Interface

Mobile users experience the web differently. First of all, the screen is smaller. This can be a problem, as Shane Ketterman points out on CopyBlogger:

?What happens when readers feel cramped or have to work hard to navigate your site or read your content? They leave.?

In order to keep visitors around, keep your pages straightforward and your links ?thumb-sized? ? especially call-to-action buttons.

    Objective Oriented Browsing

Mobile users are often accessing the web on the go and therefore they?re more likely to be using the web to meet an immediate, specific need.

According to a Google Mobile Ads study, Nine out 10 mobile searches result in an action and 88% of these users take action within the first day.

    Slower Connection Speed

Smartphones and tablets are becoming more and more powerful with every iteration, but they still can?t compete with the big boys (laptops and desktops) in terms of speed.

So if you?re load times are lagging on those devices, you?ll definitely be turning mobile users away. Try removing unnecessary plugins, images, and eliminating any Flash or Javascript.

    Multi-Tasking Mobile

Mobile devices are so convenient to use that they?re often used as a supplement to other activities. 72% of people use their smartphones while consuming other media, a third while watching TV.

So keep in mind that you likely won?t have the full attention of your mobile audience.

    Location-Specific Searches

Mobile users can access the web from anywhere and that changes what they?re able to search for online. For instance, 70% use their smartphones while shopping in a store to help make purchasing decisions.

Your online audience is no longer guaranteed to be sitting at a desk. Think about your niche:? from what other locations and situations might your audience be accessing your site?

    ?

Mastering the Mobile Web from Content Writing to Copy Writing

    Make Mobile Content Easy-to-Digest

Syed Balkhi is one of the world?s most forward-thinking bloggers, especially when it comes to content. His latest project, List25, has earned over 200,000 Facebook likes in just over a year.

He told us that ?easy to consume? content is the wave of the future, as more and more people spend their online hours casually browsing mobile devices:

?We?re seeing an emergence of infographics and motion graphics. We?re going towards an age of data consumption and we need to make it as easy to consume as possible, because people?s attention span is so low. To captivate that short attention span, you have to have very, very compelling content that?s very easy to consume.?

Income Diary is a strong proponent of writing long content because it ranks better (the average front-page search result is 2,000+ words) and because it?s more likely to be shared (as demonstrated by Neil Patel).

But Syed?s right too. As more and more people go mobile, more and more web users will be browsing your site while waiting in line, watching TV, and otherwise unable to engage with in-depth content. You can make your content more ?easy-to-consume? by putting an emphasis on visuals and videos ? and keeping text to a minimum.

    Responsive & Mobile Web Design

Jacob Cass is a graphic designer at NYC-based firm Ammirati (clients include Nintendo, Zynga, and Jerry Seinfeld). When we asked him about the future of web design, he immediately start talking about mobile:

?Responsive design is at the top of my list. A responsive website is a website that adapts to the screen that you?re viewing it on. For example, a website will change its look when you?re viewing it on a mobile device, versus a large screen.?

Upgrading to a responsive web design may be the single most important thing you can do to make your website more mobile friendly.

If you?re wondering how to make the? switch over to responsive web design, Jacob gave us this advice, ?For my site, I used the Skeleton responsive boilerplate. There?s really no reason to redo everything if there are already frameworks in place. Another good one to explore is Bootstrap, by Twitter.?

    Email Marketing and Mobile

?More and more people are going to be reading your email on little screens.?
David Risley, from Web Domination 20

Nearly all mobile users are using their device to check their email.

According to Andigo New Media, your first priority should be to limit scrolling on the email:? ?left to right scrolling is an absolute no-no but even north/south scrolling should be limited whenever possible.?

David Risley earns a six-figure income through email marketing. In our interview, he told us that optimizing your emails for mobile devices mostly comes down to keeping it as simple as possible ? especially since some mobile devices aren?t so great at displaying email:

?The nice smart phones are pretty good at scaling the email up and down. But not everybody?s walking around with an iPhone, so you have to just keep things as simple as you can.?

If you?ve got an email list, then try opening your emails with a variety of different mobile devices to see how they look.

Writing Sales Copy for a Mobile Audience

?You?ve got to balance the device with the message.?
Yanik Silver, from Web Domination 20

Yanik Silver is the creator of Instant Sales Letters and quite possibly the world?s leading expert in online copywriting. He?s also one of the first copywriters to recognize that online sales letters should adapt for mobile users.

His first advice is to keep it short:

?You?ve got to make sure that your copy is ideal for someone coming off of a mobile device. Maybe that means even shorter paragraphs. Maybe that means keeping it really tight and engaging.?

Silver also sees a sales video as a way to level the copywriting playing field across all devices:

?For someone to scroll through on their iPhones through a twenty page sales letter is
going to be a lot tougher than watching a three minute video about it.?

These sales page videos don?t have to be flashy in order to be effective on mobile. Michael Dunlop uses a video that?s just voiceover and text for his Web Domination sales page. What matters it that mobile users can digest your entire message with just one touch of the screen.

The devices are small, but the mobile web is big? and only getting bigger.

The sooner you start running your website with a mobile audience in mind, the soon you?ll be able to benefit from this fast-growing demographic.

In this post, I reviewed mobile content, design, email marketing, and sales copy, but that?s really only scratching the surface. If you have any insights into mastering the mobile web ? or questions about it ? let us know in the comments.

Princess Cottage, Hurricane Sandy Symbol, Torn ... - AOL Real Estate

The Princess Cottage, a 150-year-old home on New Jersey's Union Beach that became the symbol of Hurricane Sandy after the monster storm ripped it in half, was torn down in 15 minutes by bulldozers on Friday.

John Zois, who had lived in the home for six months before Sandy hit, had been hopeful that it could be saved. He had said that engineers told him the house was salvageable, and he was appealing to the public for donations to aid restoration of the historic home. But when that didn't prove fruitful -- and he couldn't afford the cost of saving the home himself -- the house had to be razed.

Howell Patch shot video of the teardown and interviewed Zois, who said he was sad to see the home come down but that he was glad its symbol helped get aid to the storm-damaged area.

"It's coming down today, but it stood," Zois told Howell Patch. "We're still here, and that's all I can say, really. It's time for it to come down, you know, and move forward and rebuild."

Speaking to the Asbury Park Press, Zois added: "To see my home away from home, which became my home, destroyed like this -- it's hard to take, it's just hard to take."

Sandy ripped out half of the home's first floor but left the majority of the second floor intact. Constantine Zois, John's father and owner of the Princess Cottage, said he had a feeling the house would have to come down, but "I was hoping against hope that I was dead wrong."

About 50 other property owners in the area have agreed to raze their damaged homes, the Asbury Park Press reported.

The Zois family said they plan to build another home on the site of the Princess Cottage, but it won't be an exact replica of their beloved home.

Inflation unexpectedly stays at highest since May

LONDON (Reuters) - UK inflation stayed at its highest level since May last month, confounding forecasts it would ease and potentially giving the Bank of England less room to resume quantitative easing to support the struggling economy.

The data released on Tuesday, showing annual consumer price inflation held at 2.7 percent after a surprise jump in October, will reinforce the Bank concerns that price pressures may prove persistent and restrain consumer spending.

Economists had forecast a dip in inflation to 2.6 percent in November.

High inflation, which peaked at 5.2 percent last year, has weighed on consumer spending, holding back the economy's recovery from its second recession in four years.

A fall in petrol prices was not enough to outweigh price rises for household bills for electricity and gas, as well as food, the data from the Office for National Statistics showed.

"I was a little surprised on CPI because I was expecting utility prices to have less of an impact. There are still quite a lot of utility price increases in the pipeline," said Jens Larsen, economist at RBC Capital Markets.

In addition, annual services price inflation accelerated to 4.2 percent, its highest since December 2011.

In its quarterly forecasts released last month, the Bank said British inflation was likely to be significantly higher over the next 18 months than expected in August.

The central bank's projections showed that it would take until the third quarter of 2014 before inflation fell below its 2 percent target, nine months later than predicted in August, despite sluggish economic growth.

Stubbornly high inflation deterred some policymakers from approving another cash boost for the economy in November, and earlier this month the Bank again voted against more government bond purchases.

Minutes of its last policy meeting due to be released on Wednesday will provide an insight into what drove that decision.

Worries about price rises are likely to have been among the reasons, as rate-setter Paul Fisher said last week that he would wait for signs that inflation was coming down before voting to extend asset purchases beyond the current total of 375 billion pounds ($607 billion).

Investec economist Philip Shaw said inflation was likely to rise above 3 percent over the next few months, which he said could stop the central bank's Monetary Policy Committee from injecting more stimulus into the fragile economy.

"We feel a likely rise in inflation is going to result in the MPC keeping policy on hold, but much depends on how weak the economy is and, if we were to see a very weak patch in activity, then the MPC could look through a period of increased inflation rates," he said.

There was some good news on underlying inflation pressures from separate ONS data on producer prices.

It showed that annual factory-gate inflation eased unexpectedly in November to 2.2 percent - its lowest since July - from an upwardly revised 2.6 percent in October, as input costs fell 0.3 percent on the year.

The annual rate of fuel cost inflation eased to its slowest since February 2011, though the cost of imported food rose sharply.

In the aftermath of Friday's Newtown school shooting, we've heard tales mostly horrifying and occasionally heroic, from surviving witnesses and mourning citizens alike, but this one lies somewhere in between, all the more unshakeable. 2012's legacy: The Monitor's Top 11 US stories

People celebrate as they watch President Obama's acceptance speech broadcast live in New York's Times Square following his reelection. The presidential campaign put a spotlight on young Americans ? those under age 29 made up 19 percent of the overall vote. (Andrew Kelly/Reuters)

The year 2012 caught America in a fitful mood, buffeted by rancorous national elections, meteorological monsters, school gunfire, economic ups and downs, and the bitter legacies of race and terrorism.

But how Americans have responded, historians suggest, goes beyond understanding tragedies like the Trayvon Martin shooting or the US Supreme Court's ruling that struck down large parts of Arizona's tough immigration law.

From the wreckage of superstorm Sandy came outpourings of sympathy and healing. Americans searched for solutions to unemployment and a more tumultuous climate. And they asked new questions, such as about America's grip on the changing realities in the Middle East.

Among other things, the presidential campaign put a spotlight on young Americans, showing their strong participation in civic life. Those under age 29 made up 19 percent of the overall vote.

"For all the sort of media controversies and all of the tensions that get covered on the front pages, what any number of these [top stories] will show is that we are a country that is more diverse, inclusive, transparent, and that ultimately we are a nation that has to feel a good deal of hope and optimism about this next generation," says American University historian Leonard Steinhorn. "For every unfortunate and tragic Trayvon Martin case or Colorado shooting, you have a younger generation that is probably the least prejudiced, least bigoted, and most inclusive in our nation's history."

Friend: Adam Lanza's mom was gun enthusiast

Nancy Lanza, in a photo that a relative saved from Facebook.

By Michael Isikoff and Hannah RappleyeNBC News

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The mother of the suspected Sandy Hook Elementary School gunman, herself slain at the outset of the murderous rampage, was an avid gun enthusiast who liked to take her sons to the shooting range to practice their marksmanship, a friend tells NBC News.

Dan Holmes, a local landscaper and a friend of Nancy Lanza, mother of 20-year-old suspected gunman Adam Lanza, said she also was a collector.

??She had a pretty extensive gun collection,? Holmes said. ?She was a collector, she was pretty proud of that. She always mentioned that she really loved the act of shooting.?

Holmes recalled that she said she was able to ?focus in? while shooting.

Federal officials tell NBC News that Adam Lanza took three weapons with him to the school ? two pistols, a Glock and a Sig Sauer, and a Bushmaster .223-caliber semi-automatic assault-style rifle ? all of which were registered to Nancy Lanza.

It is unclear whether all the guns were used in the attack. At a news briefing on Saturday, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. H. Wayne Carver II, who led the team that autopsied the victims, said, ?All the (injuries) ? I know of were caused by the rifle.?

The Associated Press reported that authorities investigating the school shooting later recovered additional weapons -- a Henry repeating rifle, an Enfield rifle and a shotgun. It was not clear where those weapons were found.

Holmes, Nancy Lanza?s friend, said the 47-year-old single mother also frequently talked about how she was worried about Adam.

Investigators and former classmates of Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza say he was bright, but extremely shy and remote. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

    Related content from NBCNews.com:

She talked about ?how he was an unstable kid,? he said. ?She would talk about that. ?She was very protective of him. I don?t ? think she ever got major help for him. She just tried to handle it on her own. It was something she was definitely disturbed about.?

Meantime, federal agents visited a gun shooting range near Newtown, Conn., in an effort determine if Adam Lanza visited in the months before the attack, which could indicate he was planning or practicing for the bloodbath he carried out early Friday.

Dean Price, director of the Wooster Mountain Shooting Range near Newtown, told NBC News that he was visited by agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol ,Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on Friday night and that they searched through his records for any evidence that the younger Lanza had signed in there in 2012. They also checked to see if he had used the name of his older brother, Ryan, Price said.

There was no indication that Adam Lanza had used the shooting range, which requires customers to sign in and show identification prior to using the facility, Price said.

Agents also have been checking local firearms dealers to see if Adam Lanza purchased or attempted to purchase weapons or ammunition prior to the shooting.

Law enforcement officials said members of the public reported they thought they saw Adam Lanza trying to buy a rifle at a Dick?s Sporting Good store in Danbury, but investigators have yet to confirm that. ??

NRA Tweet Before The Newtown Massacre - Business Insider

The National Rifle Association's Twitter account -- normally an active stream of pro-gun tweets -- has been silent for more than 24 hours in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., elementary school shooting that left 20 children and eight adults dead.

The NRA was in the middle of a promotional giveaway contest as the shooting occured.

Here's the last thing the organization tweeted, just a couple of hours before the murders began:

    Twitter

The NRA, of course, exists to make handguns and assault rifles like the ones used in Newtown more accessible. Unsurprisingly, the lobby group has had nothing to say about the killings. Other Twitter users, however, have plenty to say. Here are some of their tweets at @NRA (which we've censored for crude language):

    Twitter

No doubt the NRA is currently working on a statement about the shooting. Its news and current events blogs haven't been updated either.

T-Mobile improves '4G' coverage and signal strength in Chicago, SoCal and more

DNP TMobile improves '4G' coverage and signal strength in Chicago, SoCal, and more

While many T-Mobile customers may be champing at the bit to get their hands on LTE, some might be content just to see faster HSPA+ speeds at all. Which is why we applaud the carrier's latest effort at spreading its "4G" joy to five new metros, notably to large swaths of Chicago and Southern California -- Sacramento, Fresno and Reno make up the rest. The speed boost is just one upgrade; other enhancements include improved signal strength and better coverage inside buildings. Along with earlier expansion efforts, this ratchets up the number of "enhanced networks" to 23 and around 100 million people, according to a blog post from Neville Ray, T-Mobile's CTO. He also promotes the push of unlocked AT&T devices to the land of magenta, which could be a not-so-subtle hint at the future. Check the source to see if your neighborhood made the list of updated areas.

Home for the holidays - Nashville And Beyond

The holiday season is here! Our homes become the centerpiece of family gatherings, parties with friends, and places where memories are made that last a lifetime. Creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for your family and guests can be easily accomplished by just keeping a few things in mind. Not unlike the staging process for showing a home for sale, your goal is to engage all of the senses and create an environment where people feel at ?home?. Our senses play such a key role in how we perceive our environments. Sights, sounds, and smells create those subtle nuances that take a place from a ?house? to a ?home? for the holidays.

    Sights
Using natural elements to create texture for center pieces, side tables or mantels adds warmth and coziness to a room that plastic and glitter just can?t achieve. Make a trip to the forest to collect acorns, pine cones and holly branches or purchase nuts or fruits or even branch clippings from your own yard to create settings throughout your home that are warm and inviting. Even if your room doesn?t have a fireplace, we can still create that same coziness with clusters of pillar candles of different heights and sizes.

    Sounds
Investing in a sound system or even a quality iPod docking station system can be another element in creating a warm and inviting home. Men and women hear sounds differently. Men usually hear better in the lower frequency ranges, while women typically hear better in higher frequencies. Poorer quality sounds systems use speakers and equalization that fall into the mid range frequencies. Unfortunately all mid range frequencies can be perceived by both sexes as shallow, with no body to it. Selecting a higher quality system will give all of your guests the best opportunity to experience your musical selections in the warmest way. Another trick is to make sure your docking station or speakers are placed directly on the floor. The bass frequencies will travel through the floor and allow your guests to ?feel? the music as well.

    Smells
They say that our sense of smell creates the most long-lasting memories. Candles, fresh flowers, essential oils, herb bundles, potpourri and even a crackling fire can all play important roles in creating a pleasant aroma.?Even frozen dough breads, rolls or cookies, that are baked off just before guests arrive, can instantly transport your guests to good memories of Thanksgiving dinner at grandma?s or a big family feast with all the relatives, you can see why the smell of fresh baked bread or a yummy apple pie would bring about good feelings and help create an overall calming effect. Job well done.

Japan seeks a real leader after 7 PMs in 6 years

    Shizuo Kambayashi / AP, file

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, fifth from right, of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, poses with nine other leaders of political parties after a debate last month.

    By Arata Yamamoto, NBC News

TOKYO - Kazuyoshi Enokido has lost faith in traditional Japanese politics.

"I'm placing my bet on something new because there's no hope with existing parties," the salesman told NBC News as he finished submitting an early ballot ahead of Japan's election, which is scheduled for Sunday.

"Even if it means being a bit more aggressive, I would like to see someone who can pull everyone up and exert his leadership skills," said Enokido, as he stood with his wife and one-year-old child in Tokyo's Ginza District.

Voters in Japan are witnessing one of the most complex and confusing general elections in the country's history. A total of 11 political parties, most of them formed within the past year or two, are vying for parliamentary seats.

Yoshihiko Noda, 55, is Japan's seventh prime minister since 2006. And if polls are accurate, another leadership change looms. Not everyone is happy about that prospect.

"In my honest opinion, I don't know why we have to keep changing our leaders," Hiroma Shindo, 22, told NBC News. "There's no way anyone can produce any results in just two or three years."

Most of the groups vying for power are splinters from the two main parties ? the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and the?Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has held power in Japan for most of the post-war period. Their familiar faces make it that much more difficult for voters to distinguish each individual party's position on key issues.

Citing surveys, Reuters reported Friday that?between 30 percent and nearly 50 percent of voters were undecided with just days to go.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda waves to voters after an election campaign speech in Tokyo on Thursday.

"I can't decide. It's hard to know exactly what we're voting for," said Hiroko Takahashi, a 51-year-old part-time worker from Machida, a city west of Tokyo, told The Associated Press.

The challenges faced by the country ? the world's third-largest economy and one of the United States' most important allies ? are formidable.

"This time around the voters are concerned about one single simple issue, which can be called 'security'," said Tomohiko Taniguchi, former spokesman for the foreign affairs ministry who now teaches at Tokyo's Keio University.

More Japan coverage from NBC News

Security covers a lot of ground.

"Job and economic security," he said. "Secondly, nuclear security. And thirdly national security. And what is complex is, these three 'securities' are not necessarily compartmentalized. They are mutually interrelated."

More than 20 years after its "miracle economy" bubble burst, Japan seems trapped in a vicious circle of sinking prices and weak demand as sluggish growth forces businesses to slash prices and frugal-minded consumers put off spending.

There does seem to be some agreement among the parties when it comes to the economy, Taniguchi said.

"Economic security is the one that overlaps party boundaries," he added. "There is little difference if you look at the platforms of LDP and DPJ. There is little difference between them and other parties are pushing similar agendas."

None of the parties would disagree that Japan needs to wean itself from its dependence on nuclear power after last year's Fukushima disaster, while at the same time, securing a stable source of power.

"Unlike the past two (lower house) elections, the main points of contention are not so clear and in that sense, it is hard for voters to understand," said Yukio Maeda, a political science professor at the University of Tokyo.

With the exception of the Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party, the majority of the political factions also acknowledge Japan's need to rebuild its diplomatic strength by restoring its alliance with the United States.

Relations deteriorated over the handling of a bilateral agreement to relocate a controversial key U.S. airbase on Okinawa Island, a situation made even more acute because of the contentious territorial dispute with China over a group of islands in the East China Sea.

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

Opinion polls by the Asahi, Yomiuri and Nikkei newspapers on Thursday predicted that the LDP was?on track for a stunning victory in the election, with hawkish former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe returning to power. They?forecast that the LDP was headed for a hefty majority in the powerful?lower house of parliament.

Abe abruptly resigned in 2007 for health reasons after leading the country for just a year.

Shinzo Abe, a former prime minister who is currently leader of Japan's main opposition Liberal Democratic Party, waves to supporters from his car on Thursday.

Reuters reported that the polls suggested the LDP and its smaller ally, the New Komeito party, could even gain the two-thirds majority needed to break through a policy deadlock that has plagued the country since 2007.

If no single party wins the majority in the 480-seat lower house, a coalition government would be formed. With so many fledgling parties, a few, no matter how tiny, may end up wielding considerable clout, getting wooed to join a coalition government.

The new party with the most momentum -- and one that could be part of the coalition government -- is the Japan Restoration Party, led by Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara and Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto, who have been pushing for a more assertive Japan capable of flexing its military muscle in territorial disputes with China.

Taniguchi said one thing appears certain: Japanese voters desire "a government that could stay long in power."

At Tokyo's Shimbashi Station on Friday, one retiree agreed with that assessment -- warning that political instability was damaging Japan's international reputation.

"The way our leaders come and go, it's too frequent," said the 66-year-old woman, who only gave her name as Ms. Itoh. "The world will stop paying attention to us."

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Special Episode: Usenet Indexers Close Up Shop

Special Episode: Usenet Indexers Close Up ShopOn this week's podcast we're having a discussion with Derek Bambauer, associate professor of law at University of Arizona. We'll be discussing the war between content providers and content pirates in light of the recent closure of Usenet's two primary indexers.

How to Listen to This Week's Episode

Here's how you can listen to our episode:

    About This Episode

Special Episode: Usenet Indexers Close Up ShopThis week is a special episode. We actually didn't plan on putting together an episode at all, but in light of the closure of NZBMatrix and Newzbin2, the two primary indexers of Usenet content, we thought it would be worth talking about in a bit more detail. To give us a legal context, we asked Derek Bambauer to join us. This episode consists of a discussion with Derek about the past, present, and future of the entertainment industry and how technology isn't far off from reshaping the landscape of film and television for the foreseeable future.

    What's Coming Next?

On December 20th, 2012, we're going to have a live show on Google Hangouts. We'll post more information about this show next week, but we're planning to get started around 11:00 AM Pacific time. If you've got questions you'd like to ask us live, save it for the 20th. We won't be able to get to everyone, but if we have a lot of awesome leftover questions we'll try to get to them when the podcast returns to its standard format after the New Year. After the 20th, we'll be taking a break for the holidays but we'll be back in 2013.

How Do I Submit a Question?

Special Episode: Usenet Indexers Close Up ShopThere are three ways to send in your question:

Please keep your questions as brief as possible. This means about 3-5 sentences for emails and 30-60 seconds for calls and videos. Your questions can be specific, but broader questions are generally better because they'll apply to more people. For example, "how can I breathe new life into my old PDA?" is much better than "what can I do with an old HP iPAQ 210?" Either way, we look forward to hearing from you!

Alan Alda and kids ask: 'What is time?'

Actor Alan Alda has a question for scientists around the world. He wants to know what time is.

Oh, and he wants the explanation in words an 11-year-old would understand.

Alda, known for his roles on the television show "M*A*S*H" and "The West Wing," has turned his interest toward science communication as a founding member of the Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University in New York. Last year, he challenged scientists to answer the question "What is flame?"

      1. Ancient copy of Ten Commandments goes digital

Updated 116 minutes ago 12/13/2012 12:53:34 AM +00:00 The Cambridge Digital Library has just made available thousands of pages from fragile religious manuscripts for Internet users' perusal, including a 2,000-year-old copy of the Ten Commandments, known as the "Nash Papyrus."

      2. Solving a 100-year-old scientific hoax
      3. Alan Alda and kids ask: 'What is time?'
      4. First cheesemakers date back 7,500 years

That query was inspired by a question Alda himself asked a teacher as an 11-year-old boy. The answer he received at the time ? "oxidation" ? meant nothing to him, so he launched the Flame Challenge last year to get a better answer. The winner of the contest, University of Innsbruck physics doctoral student Ben Ames, made a song and video to explain the concept.

This year, Alda and the Center for Communicating Science crowdsourced questions from today's 11-year-olds. When they got a number of queries about time, time travel and the beginning of time, they decided to distill the question into a deceptively simply one: What is time ?

"They're asking a very deep question this year (What is Time?!)," Alda wrote on the Center's website. "It's going to be fun to see how scientists around the world answer that one in everyday language."

Scientists are welcomed to send in their responses by March 1, 2013, using video, song, animation or any other tool that might help make sense of the question. The only criteria: The answer must interest and inform 11-year-olds, who will judge the answers and choose the final winner.

In a video on the site, Alda encourages fourth- through sixth-graders to become judges: "The wonderful thing about this contest is the entries are going to be judged by real 11-year-olds. So this is one time when people your age get a chance to tell people their age 'No, good try, but you didn't quite do it,' or 'Great try, and you win the contest.'"
