Setting Goals - Balanced Life Skills Martial Arts

Teaching character and life skills to students

Everyone would agree that achieving goals require self discipline. It does not matter if the goals we have are about how we eat, our finances, personal relationships, organizing our work, reducing our television watching or anything else it all requires self discipline.

The fourth part of gaining self discipline is more than just saying we are going to do something ? it is in fact the step of setting self ? discipline goals. This fourth step is the basis of all the rest that we have talked about. If you do not have clearly defined, short term and long term goals ? you have no need for self control, motivation or persistence.

Self discipline goals are about self improvement and the goals must be clearly defined or specific with dates or time frames included. Simply wanting something is not enough, but when you are specific about what you want, when you want to accomplish it by, and set up specific actions and schedule then you can use self control, motivation, and persistence in reaching your self improvement goal.

If I have a goal of eating 5 portions of vegetables every day, then we can ask ourselves every time we eat if we are demonstrating self discipline in our eating habit and working to reach the goal. We may have to use self control and not eat something less healthy, or we may have to rethink our motivation or remind ourselves that individuals with self discipline would persist in getting all of the portions in to the day. How would a self disciplined person thnk or act? When you demonstrate self discipline you will thank yourself later for being strong, exercising self control, and persisting with your specific goal.

This is the fourth in a series of post on self discipline:

Part one: Self Control

Part two: Motivation

Part three: Persistence

Parting Schotts: Union women's hockey team beats UConn, 3-2, for first-ever season-opening win

The Union College women?s hockey team celebrated the start of its 10th NCAA Division I season by doing something it hadn?t done in its previous nine season-opening games.

Christine Valente?s power-play goal midway through the third period Saturday lifted the Dutchwomen to a 3-2 non-conference victory over Connecticut in the opening game for both teams at Messa Rink. It was the Dutchwomen?s first season-opening victory in their 10 years at Division I. They had lost their previous nine openers.

"It was a great way to start the season," said Claudia Barcomb, who is starting her sixth season as Union's head coach. "Our freshmen did a great job, and our veterans were really poised. It was good."

The Dutchwomen twice overcame one-goal deficits. After Rachel Farrel had given UConn a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal with 10:05 left in the first period, Jessica Kaminsky tied it with 6:34 left in the first. The Huskies regained the lead with 6.8 seconds left in the period on Caitlin Hewes? power-play goal.

Emma Rambo tied it for Union midway through the second period. The score remained 2-2 into the third when UConn?s Maude Blain was called for checking at 9:24. Just 14 seconds later, Valente made Blain pay.

"It's one game, but it's a step in the right direction," Barcomb said.

Goalie Alana Marcinko made 30 saves for Union. Haley Welch had two assists for the Dutchwomen, who return to action Oct. 12 at Northeastern.

Flood insurance - why it could kill your transaction and how to ...

In August of last year FEMA released revised flood maps. The result was that areas that had never had flood issues, not even in the worst times, are all of a sudden in flood zones and therefore have to be covered with flood insurance if sold with a mortgage.

?

Why, you might ask yourselves, well, my private opinion is that FEMA had so much to cover in Florida, Louisiana and wherever natural disasters hit in the past years, where people want to live in front of bodies of water or close by, get washed out and then REBUILD (or are allowed to rebuild which really should be impossible) that they needed to find new revenue. So they reassessed their potential risks and covered everybody who remotely might in the next 100-500 years be hit? And all of those poor people are paying for the ones who rebuild?and get washed out again?

Although flood insurance policies are issued by insurance companies, it is FEMA who sets the rates.

?

?

?

Another example of our government taking a risk from us only to bill us tenfold. It is beyond me why I can insure my house against total loss from a fire for $400 but would need to pay 10 times as much for flooding. Gone is gone, why would it cost more from water than from fire? Because water is a usually a disaster and then our Government declares itself responsible and pays. Since that has gotten out of control they are opening the risk for us all remotely anywhere near a body of water to enthusiastically participate?

?

At the end of the day, again, everybody is covering the ones that insist to live and rebuild in areas that are prone to these natural disasters. Since you cannot mortgage a house in a flood zone without flood insurance you are subject to mandate.

?

Have other explanations? I welcome your comments!

?

What can you as the broker do to at least be well prepared?

?

Go to the FEMA webpage (www.floodsmart.gov) and look whether your property is in a flood zone, if it is:

?

  • ?? get an elevation certificate for the property, and that means for EVERY building that is fixed to the ground. Only removable aka personal property is exempt. So make sure your garden shed is movable, it will save you money!

  • ??? The FEMA webpage will give you a range of coverage, expect the worst
  • ??? Attempt to get a coverage bid from an insurance agency. This will not be easy, flood insurance is amazingly complicated and involved, but it is worth a try as you now know for sure what a buyer has to expect and can spell it out and disclose, avoiding future problems.
  • ?? If the house is near a flood zone make sure the lender have their flood insurance department conduct a manual search, so that there are no unpleasant surprises.

  • ?? Make sure the lender understands if there are any fixed outbuildings and that they might need coverage

  • existing policies are often transferable, check for that, they might have? a lower rate than a a new one

?

?

What can you as a seller do? Even if you never had to pay FI and never had so much as a puddle in your driveway, if your property is in a newly designated flood zone, there is not much you can do and you have to PRICE ACCORDINGLY and DISCLOSE. If your buyer has to pay $4000 a year in FI it diminishes the value of your property significantly. And it is better to tell that upfront than let the deal tank later because the buyer finds out from the lender?

?

The average buyer stays in the new home 7 years before it is being sold again. With the example from above that is $28000 in FI. With no return on investment. And a buyer will have the same problem a seller has when they sell the property again. Therefore a seller has to be aware and willing to negotiate and offer the property at an acceptable price.

A really great property, well covered and acquired at a good price, is WORTH IT!

?

What can a buyer do? Calculate $ 200-400 per month (more or less depending on location) for the privilege. If you want to live at the river side and watch the majestic waters flow by you have to pay up for it.

Have an office or business at the property? then your premium might be deductible, check with your accountant.

There are later measure you might be able to take to elevate your building. A berm might help, too.

Overall we all will be asked to pay up for more and more that the giant risk pool called government thought it could cover but ultimately cannot.

Private insurer are assessing their risk and price accordingly, it is local coverage depending on local circumstances. FEMA is national and assesses risk nationally, to the disadvantage of the ones you are forced to participate.

New clues about ancient water cycles shed light on U.S. deserts

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The deserts of Utah and Nevada have not always been dry. Between 14,000 and 20,000 years ago, when large ice caps covered Canada during the last glacial cooling, valleys throughout the desert southwest filled with water to become large lakes, scientists have long surmised. At their maximum size, the desert lakes covered about a quarter of both Nevada and Utah. Now a team led by a Texas A&M University researcher has found a new water cycle connection between the U.S. southwest and the tropics, and understanding the processes that have brought precipitation to the western U.S. will help scientists better understand how the water cycle might be perturbed in the future.

Mitch Lyle, professor of oceanography, led the study with colleagues from Columbia University, University of California-Santa Cruz, Stanford University, Hokkaido University of Japan, Brown University and the U.S. Geological Survey. Their work, funded by the National Science Foundation, is published in the current issue of Science magazine.

The dry shorelines of these glacial lakes were first discovered by 19th century geologists when the west was first explored, Lyle explains, adding that the source of the additional water has been a mystery. By assembling data from ocean sediments and from dry western valleys collected over the last 30 years, Lyle and the team found a new water cycle connection between the southwest U.S. and the tropics.

"Large ice caps profoundly altered where storms went during glacial periods. Before this study, it was assumed that Pacific winter storms that now track into Washington and Canada were pushed south into central and southern California," Lyle notes.

"However, by comparing timing between wet intervals on the coast, where these storms would first strike, with growth of the inland lakes, we found that they didn't match."

The team was able to time wet periods along the California coast from pollen buried in marine sediments from cores archived by scientists at the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program at Texas A&M. They evaluated lake level studies from southeast Oregon, Nevada, Utah, eastern California, New Mexico, and west Texas to find when lakes filled in different parts of the west.

"Many teams of scientists have been working on this problem since the 1950s, when radiocarbon dating first allowed ages to be put on old shorelines," Lyle adds. "The data we synthesized covers a wide latitude so that we could determine how the glacial wet intervals operated."

Only southern California coastal wet intervals matched with the progression of high lakes inland, pointing to the development of a tropical connection, where storms cycled into the region from the tropical Pacific, west of southern Mexico.

"We think that the extra precipitation may have come in summer, enhancing the now weak summer monsoon in the desert southwest. But we need more information about what season the storms arrived to strengthen this speculation," Lyle says.

Not only is the development of the glacial lakes important from a paleoclimate perspective, but it is likely that the lakes were important to the migration of people into North America, Lyle believes. Many of the archaeological sites where early Indians settled when they first came into the U.S. are rock shelters at the edges of these ancient lakes. The lakes were a major source of fish, and a gathering place for deer and wildfowl at that time.

"What we need to do now is look at all of this on a finer scale," Lyle points out. "We need to understand better the processes that directed the storms thousands of years ago, and to predict better what changes might occur in the future."

NJ woman accused of cancer scam for wedding, cash

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (AP) ? When Lori Stilley told her friends and family that she had bladder cancer, they delivered meals, held raffles and a T-shirt sale, hastily planned and paid for her wedding and raised more than $10,000 for her treatment.

But prosecutors say it was all a scam.

Stilley, a 40-year-old who lives in Delran, N.J., was charged Wednesday with theft by deception, charges her lawyer denies.

Authorities say she told family and friends in February 2011 that she had stage 3 bladder cancer and would need chemotherapy and radiation. Two months later, she told them ? and posted on her Facebook page and personal website ? that it was now stage 4, which means the cancer was spreading to other parts of her body.

Her friends and supporters pitched in the way people often do for sick loved ones: making a schedule of meal deliveries and ? when she said she didn't have medical insurance ? raising money.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said family and friends also hastily planned and paid for her wedding to her boyfriend last year.

Stilley even wrote an e-book about her experience. They say "I'mpossible: How A Facebook Group Loved Me Through Bladder Cancer," selling for $14.99 a copy, raised more than $3,000.

An investigation found that Stilley had never been treated for nor diagnosed with cancer, prosecutors said.

Her sister says she was the one who turned in Stilley. "I just did it for her to get help and for my niece and nephew, too, to feel safe," Lori Digiovanni told WCAU-TV in Philadelphia.

DiGiovanni told the TV station that she became suspicious when Stilley's story changed quickly. Soon after telling friends and family that she was making hospice plans and was given a month to live, she posted on Facebook that she felt a miracle coming and was feeling better.

DiGiovanni said she believes her sister needs mental health counseling.

Stilley's lawyer, however, said she did not do anything wrong.

"The Prosecutor's Office has not presented me with any competent evidence that would lead me to believe they are able to prove my client did anything wrong," Adam Malamut told the Burlington County Times in a story published Thursday. "The only evidence I'm aware of are statements made that I believe to be slanderous in nature from a family member with whom she's had a fractured relationship."

Stilley was arrested Wednesday and released on bail of $25,000.

"For this defendant to represent that she was dying from this terrible disease for the sake of personal gain and sympathy goes way beyond simply being a criminal offense," Burlington County Prosecutor Robert Bernardi said in a statement, "it was extremely cruel to those who were concerned and worked hard to lend assistance."

Yahoo CEO Mayer demands product launches within six months

Yahoo CEO Mayer

As we?ve noted previously, Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Marissa Mayer is not messing around when it comes to getting her new company up to speed with her former employer,?Google (GOOG). And now, unnamed sources have told?Business Insider?that Mayer has delivered a new ultimatum for employees working on product pitches: Figure out a way to get it out the door in six months or don?t bother pitching it at all. What?s more, Yahoo will no longer consider investing in any project ?if it doesn?t have a realistic shot of reaching 100 million users or generate $100 million toward the company?s top line.?

Chrome for Android update brings Google browser to Intelpowered smartphones

While the Motorola RAZR i hasn't yet hit stores, when it does, it'll now be able to tap into the Chrome Mobile app, following its latest update. We're putting the Intel-powered Android 4.0 phone through the review wringer right now, but have already noticed the lack of Chrome browser support.

Due to the way Intel x86-based devices run apps, the browser required some adjustments, which are now complete. At the moment, the only existing phone that officially runs Android 4.0 on a Medfield processor is the incoming RAZR i, but now any future Intel smartphones will also get the full Chrome experience -- and Motorola gets to keep its promise of preinstalling the browser on its new devices.

Tiny seahorse spotted in underwater Google Street View

Caroline Morley, online picture researcher

1st-image002.jpg

(Images: Ed Roberts)

As Street View takes the plunge underwater, you will not see a man with a horse's head but you might be able to spot this tiny Denise's pygmy seahorse, Hippocampus denise. The species was confirmed in Australian waters for the first time during the underwater Catlin Seaview Survey, which is mapping the world's reefs to create a watery Google Street View. The seahorse was found at the Great Barrier Reef, off Heron Island, at a depth of 92 metres.

Having completed equipment trials, the project was officially launched this week as it begins to chart the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea of Australia. Next year, it will move on to the deep and shallow coral reefs of Hawaii, the Philippines and Bermuda.

At the Great Barrier Reef, the Catlin Seaview team plans to take up to 50,000 continuous high-resolution, 360-degree panoramic images using a tablet-operated underwater camera. The photos will be stitched together so that web users can take a virtual dive over the reefs - imagery from initial trials of the camera can already be explored on Google Maps.

What Is 'Native Advertising'? Depends Who You Ask

Like Gangnam Style, the term ?native advertising? was fairly obscure until mid-August and then all of the sudden it was everywhere.

Well, not everywhere, but it seemed to be in advertising circles and blogs where various experts got to tee off on the matter. Suddenly, would-be social media gurus had a new pet term to throw around to make others feel behind the curve. But is there actually any substance behind it, or is native advertising just the latest buzzword in an industry that specializes in creating buzzwords?

The answer: It depends on who you talk to. Native advertising appears to mean different things to different people.

First, some etymology: ?Native advertising? appears to have come from a talk that investor Fred Wilson gave at OMMA Global last September. Wilson didn?t use the term ?native advertising,? but he did mention ?native monetization? for web properties, which he described as ads that were ?unique and native to the experience? of the site. Dan Greenberg, the CEO of Sharethrough, liked the idea and began promoting it. Greenberg told Mashable he doesn?t know if he coined the term ?native advertising,? but he began evangelizing the concept.

But what is it? When asked for a definition, Greenberg offered, ?a form of media that?s built into the actual visual design and where the ads are part of the content.? While Greenberg draws a distinction between native advertising and content marketing, John LoGioco, SVP and general manager of content at Outbrain, says the two are pretty much the same. ??Native advertising? seems to be the thing that most are able to hang on to and get it,? he says. ?If people understand better, that?s great.?

Not everyone sees native advertising as a publisher-driven phenomenon, though. Others in the industry say native advertising refers to communication on social media platforms between brands and their customers. So when The Atlantic described a new campaign for Fidelity Investments as native advertising, some called BS.

The loudest such critic, Deep Focus CEO Ian Schafer, considers native advertising in this case just a re-packaged version of advertorials, a timeworn ad format for print media. Schafer?s definition is a bit different: ?Advertising that takes advantage of a platform in the ways consumers are actually using it.? For Schafer, that means something like Facebook?s Sponsored Stories, which merely amplifies the communication that?s going on between fans and brands or Premium Ads that let a brand pay to blast fans with a recent status update. Twitter?s Promoted Tweets don?t fit the bill because that?s merely an intrusive banner ad by another name, but Promoted Accounts works because consumers can choose to follow and interact with the account.

James Gross, the co-founder of Percolate, agrees that native advertising can?t occur on a third-party publisher?s site. ?What?s happening in social is that brands are acquiring audiences and then natively communicating with those audiences,? he says. ?Brands are the publishers and they?re given the same tools as everyone else.? For instance, Gross says, Coca-Cola may have 50 million fans, but it gets the same Facebook Page that you and I do. He says the model is a change since ?brands have always borrowed media space [from publishers] and rammed through their message.?

To complicate matters further, Greenberg says he has no problem lumping in advertorials with native advertising. ?An advertorial, if done right, is a form of native advertising,? he says.

Despite the back and forth, though, Greenberg doesn?t see much of a difference of opinion. For him, all the activity falls under one broad umbrella. ?We?re using different words, but we?re all dancing around the same definition,? he says. ?It?s good content and a user experience that?s consistent.?

7 tips for playing 'Borderlands 2' with friends

11 hrs.

You may think that the best thing about "Borderlands 2" is the guns.?

And, well, you might be right. At least in part. Like the first (much loved) "Borderlands" game, "Borderlands 2" is a?first-person-shooter/role-playing?mashup that finds players on a distant planet, scooping up a stunning array of guns (there are?"millions and millions" of them)?that must then be?used to take on a wildly?colorful host of bad guys and even badder creatures.

But give this game some real playtime and you'll discover that, like the first "Borderlands," what really makes?"Borderlands 2" tick is the people you play with.?The new game ??which drops players onto the planet of Pandora for a gun-filled, madcap treasure hunting adventure ??is specially made to be played cooperatively with up to four people. And playing together ??guns blazing ??is an absolute, well, blast.

"Co-op is at the heart of everything we do here," Gearbox Software's?Randy Varnell, the?design producer for "Borderlands 2," told me during a recent interview. And, he said, this time around, the co-op gameplay has been beefed up and polished up?even more.

"It definitely has grown up," he said, explaining that they've added new features such as?online?split-screen gameplay?as?well as the new Bandit Technical?vehicle that lets four players ride and gun together. There's also new enemies that are "far more challenging."?(Watch out for?Terramorphous?the Invincible????a very big, very bad boss?that will take four very skilled, very powerful players to take down.)

Meanwhile,?"You look at how we?ve designed the classes and?abilities, and?you?re going to find even more ways to play with your friends," Varnell said.

But playing well with others isn?t always easy. And so?I asked Varnell for some tips on how players can make the most of their "Borderlands 2"?co-op game. Here was his advice:

1.?Mix?and match the?characters?in your team
There are?four new character classes in "Borderlands 2" ??Axton the?Commando,?Maya the?Siren,?Salvador the Gunzerker and?Zer0 the?Assassin (see top photo). They each have different strengths and different sets of?skills you can put to use?as you play. And while you can play the same character your friends are playing when you play together, Varnell says you?really should mix it up.

"To?get?the most out of co-op, I would say pick a couple of different classes," he said. "And even?more important than that, make a?plan (more on that below). Each class has three skill trees. And?we really spent a lot of time with 'Borderlands 2' making sure each skill tree is?different."

Play?Maya the Siren, for example, and follow the skill tree known as "Harmony" and you'll end up with a character who has?some really great?healing powers that can be a big?help to your team. If you put her?Harmony skills to use, she will be able to instantly revive a dying friend?from a distance and she can even?fire healing bullets at her own teammates.

Meanwhile, Salvador the Gunzerker has a "Brawn" skill tree that ramps up his physical toughness.

"He has a lot of abilities that just turn him into the guy?who can wade into the middle of a fight and take all the damage from the?enemies and distract them," Varnell says. "Which is a really popular tactic?in co-op."

These are the kinds of things you should take some time to think about before you start a?co-op game because it will really pay off in the long run.

"Especially if you?re playing with more than two players, I almost?always say get a Maya in your group and go Harmony," Varnell said, adding, "A Salvador in the Brawn tree and a?Maya in the Harmony tree would be really awesome together."

2.?Have a strategy
"All of our characters have different things they?can do and different ways you can play them," Varnell said. "Talk with your friends. Even if you?re match-making with someone online, we have built-in voice chat now so say hello and say, 'Hey, how are you playing your Salvador? Are you sniping or going?melee?with Zer0? Are you support Maya or damage Maya?'

"Try understanding how the other player is playing their character and adapt?to their play style," Varnell advises. "There are lots of different strategies, but finding one that works in your group is a really great thing to do."

3.?Be?nice?... and share?(sometimes)
You can play "Borderlands 2" split-screen with a friend sitting?beside you on the couch?or you can let?the game's online?matchmaking put you together with strangers. ?But no matter how you're connecting or?who you're playing with,?"Be nice," Varnell says.?"I think that?s a general rule for all of life."

Sure, a little friendly competition is?part of the game.?Because "Borderlands 2" is set on Pandora ??a planet alive with a very wild?wild-west spirit ? the game involves competing?to see who gets the best loot:?awesome guns, cash and other goodies that appear in the game as you explore the world?and defeat enemies.

"When a?gun drops,?we don?t give you two copies. You have to decide who?gets that piece of loot," Varnell says. "We think that?s really important and that's actually?one of the most interesting parts of co-op. But you know, be nice and be?considerate. If someone else is using sniper rifles and a good sniper rifle?drops, you should probably let them have it. And vice?versa. When that shotgun you?ve always wanted drops,?they should probably let you have it.

"It really is one of those great heartwarming, awesome teambuilding experiences," Varnell says. "And I?m not trying to be clich? here. It really is?awesome when you play with a great team and you have that kind of graciousness?and you think of each other."

4.?Save?your friends when they need saving
Pay?attention to what the other people on your team are doing because with all those bullets and baddies flying?they may need you ??and need you badly ??at any moment.

"Borderlands 2" features Second Wind and Revive mechanics. That is, if?during a battle you're badly injured and lose all of your health, you will go into a "down state." At that point,?you have a certain?amount of time? to try to kill an?enemy on your own, which will will revive you and get you?back up in the fight. During that limited time,?you can also?recover if a?friend comes over and revives you.

"Taking??a moment to go and bring a friend back into the fight can?be really, really important," Varnell said. "Having two people up in a fight is going to take the?enemies down faster and it's going to help the fight go a whole lot better."

And for those of you worried about taking damage and risking your own life?while you?revive your teammate, Varnell offers this important tip: "When you are reviving a co-op teammate, you actually take less?damage from enemies."

Being the hero really does pay off.

5.?Look?for those?Class Mods
Class Mods?are items that can be found or bought in Borderlands (check those hidden?lockers and chests, people) or earned for completing missions. They are upgrades that give an added boost to your character's abilities. But perhaps even?more importantly, some of them can give a?boost to?the entire team.

"There are things like Team Health Regeneration, Team Ammo Regeneration ??which is really cool ??and Team Shield Capacity," Varnell says. "What?s really cool,?especially if you play with?a three or four-person?co-op group, is if you hunt down those Class Mods that have?those team abilities on them and everybody has one of those. Man, it makes?your team super powerful."

6.?Take the time to hear the story?and dialog
Varnell points out that, with "Borderlands 2," Gearbox really took the time to beef up and flesh out the story and the world that players experience.

"The?world of Pandora is an?amazingly quirky, fun, odd place. It has lot of story and?dialog," he says. "And a lot of that dialog?is spoken now. In fact, there is some incredible voice acting?in the game."

And so he advises players to take the time to hear the dialog and pay attention to the story. And that means,?when?playing?with friends, you have to be especially careful and respectful of what your teammates are doing.

For example,?"In the hub city of Sanctuary, there are eight or 10?different missions immediately available, and if everyone accepts a?different mission?at the same time you're going to stomp on the order of the dialog," he explains. "It will create a less-than-ideal?experience if you don?t pay attention to what other people are doing.

"So my pro-tip for people who want to engage in the story and appreciate and understand that story,?is take some time. Let the mission play out and?let people hear what?s going on there," he says.

Which leads us to...

7. Enjoy the journey
"It?s a big, wild,?weird place and it's full of fun," Varnell says of "Borderlands 2." "A lot of people are rushing through because they want to be the first to reach?the level cap and they want to be the?first to finish the story, but there?s a lot to experience. This is a big game.?Enjoy it. Enjoy it?at your own?pace."

I'd prefer to have the Tempest Pirate crew filled before I take on any other roles. Seeing as this RolePlay revolves around them...so.

Ubuntu Made Easy Shortens the Learning Curve

Ubuntu is among the most popular and user-friendly Linux operating systems you will find. That said, Ubuntu can be intimidating and frustrating to computer users just stepping out of the World of Windows. Nothing beats learning how to use the Linux operating system like hands-on discovery. Having someone to coach you through the questions does a lot to remove frustrations and shorten the learning curve.

(AP) ? Sharon Stone has helped to raise more than $1.1 million (?846,000) for AIDS research during Milan Fashion Week.

Hours after she was taken briefly to a hospital after feeling unwell following a Fendi runway show, the 54-year-old Stone looked fine as she enticed higher bids at the amfAR Foundation for AIDS Research charity auction Saturday night.

Designer Roberto Cavalli paid ?35,000 ($45,500) for a new interpretation of the Bocca sofa shaped like lips after Stone reclined on the piece, demonstrating its comfort.

A 2004 Damien Hirst etching of nine colored dots called "Quene 1-AM" netted ?110,000 ($143,000) while a Robert Rauschenberg print "Site" earned ?40,000 ($52,000).

The foundation said most of the money it raises is used for research toward finding a cure for AIDS.

Consider a Pet Trust - MS Estate Planning

?

Under the law, pets are property, not living things in need of breakfast and a good scratch. That means your precious pooch or coddled cat could easily end up in a shelter?or worse?if you die or are unable to care for it.

Planning for your estate or "things"? check.

Planning for your loved ones or "persons"? check.

But wait, what about your pet? A pet is neither quite a person, nor is a pet quite a thing. Don't fret! There are options to protect your beloved pet's future.

Trusts are fairly powerful legal devices, amendable to many situations, and when they primarily benefit a friend with feathers, fins or fur, then they are appropriately termed "pet-trusts." This special form of trust was the recent topic of an article in The Wall Street Journal titled "Pondering a Trust for Your Pet."

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is taking unprecedented steps to address the practical and legal considerations of ownerless but bequeathed pets. If you are an animal-lover planning your estate, then this ought to be an interesting development.

When considering if a "pet trust" is the right option for your animal friend, assess your pet's needs and your family's ability to fulfill those needs. This type of planning is another way to have peace of mind knowing that your pet will be cared for in the future.
