Parting Schotts: Union women's hockey team beats UConn, 3-2, for first-ever season-opening win

The Union College women?s hockey team celebrated the start of its 10th NCAA Division I season by doing something it hadn?t done in its previous nine season-opening games.

Christine Valente?s power-play goal midway through the third period Saturday lifted the Dutchwomen to a 3-2 non-conference victory over Connecticut in the opening game for both teams at Messa Rink. It was the Dutchwomen?s first season-opening victory in their 10 years at Division I. They had lost their previous nine openers.

"It was a great way to start the season," said Claudia Barcomb, who is starting her sixth season as Union's head coach. "Our freshmen did a great job, and our veterans were really poised. It was good."

The Dutchwomen twice overcame one-goal deficits. After Rachel Farrel had given UConn a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal with 10:05 left in the first period, Jessica Kaminsky tied it with 6:34 left in the first. The Huskies regained the lead with 6.8 seconds left in the period on Caitlin Hewes? power-play goal.

Emma Rambo tied it for Union midway through the second period. The score remained 2-2 into the third when UConn?s Maude Blain was called for checking at 9:24. Just 14 seconds later, Valente made Blain pay.

"It's one game, but it's a step in the right direction," Barcomb said.

Goalie Alana Marcinko made 30 saves for Union. Haley Welch had two assists for the Dutchwomen, who return to action Oct. 12 at Northeastern.
