State, local crime patrols expand to Central Falls | Turn to 10

By: Wire Reports | The Associated Press

Rhode Island State Police are partnering with Central Falls officers to boost law enforcement in a city that's seen the size of its force significantly reduced.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee and State Police Col. Steven O'Donnell on Tuesday highlighted last month's launch of the Neighborhood Response Team program.

Between three and five state troopers are pairing up with Central Falls officers for patrols in peak periods. O'Donnell says the collaboration has already yielded successes in responding to drug, gun and child abduction cases.

Central Falls' police force has decreased from 44 officers to 32 while the city has been under the control of a state receiver.

Chafee says the cooperative approach reduces crime while bolstering relations between state and local authorities.

A similar partnership has been used in Providence since 2005.
