AQUATICS

Houston Swim Club tryouts: The Houston Swim Club, 8307 Augustine, is holding tryouts for girls and boys ages 6 and older.

New Wave swim club: The New Wave Aquatic Swim club is open to all swimmers who are pool-safe (able to swim a length of the pool comfortably). Children and young adults of all swimming abilities, ages 6-18, are invited to join New Wave Aquatics. New swimmers of all levels are welcome to join at any time.

BASEBALL

South Central Little League Fall Baseball: Fall Ball Training Camp: a training and development program for returning and new players between the ages 5-12. The season runs Sept. 29 ? Nov. 17. More information can be found at www.eteamz.com/scllhouston.

HCYA baseball: The Homeschool Christian Youth Association (HCYA) Eagles seek a few good high school baseball players to complete the roster. Featuring competitive Christian homeschool varsity and junior varsity teams with professional coaching, the Eagles compete against high school teams and in tournaments in Houston and around Texas. Several prior teams have qualified to play in the national Homeschool World Series in Florida against teams from 10 states.

BASKETBALL

Seeking Basketball Player, Post Position: TKO Select 15U boys team is looking for a 6?5? or taller post player for the upcoming season. Play Hard classes: Play Hard Youth Sports is registering boys and girls in grades 3-8 for basketball classes. For information, call 832-512-4069.

Basketball clinics: Brentwood?s Lifelong Learning Center will host high school and middle school basketball skills clinics Saturdays from 10 a.m.-noon. There is a fee involved. The clinics are for boys and girls, and hard work is enforced. The clinics are built on Christian fellowship.

Open gym: Brentwood?s Lifelong Learning Center will host an open gym for high school and middle school basketball players Monday through Thursday (of spring break) from 3-6 p.m. There is no cost. Rules are enforced and boys and girls are welcome.

Players needed: Houston Challengers, a competitive 17 & under basketball team, needs up to three players in all positions. Players must be dedicated with experience and fundamental skills. Rice/UH tryouts: Girls and boys ages 11-15 can try out for select basketball teams coached by student athletes from Rice University and the University of Houston.

BOXING

Aztec gym: Aztec Empire Boxing Gym, 742 Telephone Road, one block from Austin High School, accepts boys, girls, men and women from age 5 through adult. Classes are available. Hours are 5-9 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment Saturday and Sunday.Cost is $45 per month; there are no registration fees.

FOOTBALL

Houston Select Football League accepting registration: A Houston football league for middle school boys has made changes and is excited about the new fall season. New team registration and applications are now being accepted. When a team submits the registration form AND pays the deposit it reserves its team name and team colors. That is first come, first served. So, in order to make sure you get the team name and uniform colors you want, please submit the team application as soon as possible. The team applications may be downloaded here: http://www.hsfl.org. The number of teams will be capped at 8 for each division. Applications will be reviewed and the highest quality organizations and coaches will be selected.

Alief Youth Football Seeks Players: Flag, Prep, JV and Varsity football season is here again and the Alief Youth Football Organization is seeking players to join their competitive teams. Football, cheerleading: The Fourth Ward Cardinals Youth Football and Cheer Squad Season is on its way for the fall season (youth ages 5-16). Southwest Football League: Preparations are under way for the Southwest Football League (SFL) Fall 2008 season and online registration is ongoing. New players can register online. Registration for the SFL is open to players entering grades 1-8 in Fall 2008. Players entering grades 1-6 who reside in the 77005, 77019, 77025, 77027, 77030, 77096, 77098 and 77401 zip codes are eligible to play in the SFL. There are no zip code restrictions for players entering grades 7-8 in the fall, so players throughout the city are encouraged to sign up for the SFL Senior Division. Football program: There will be a football program for boys ages 5-12 and a cheerleading program for girls ages 5-13 (as of Aug. 1, 2008). Registration will be at 3410 East T.C. Jester, and all fees are due at sign-up (football annual membership is $35 and participation is $75, and includes pants, jersey, socks & helmet decal; cheerleading annual membership is $35). Regular signups are Thursday from 6-8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon.

Tejas Youth Football: Tejas Youth Football and Cheer registration is now under way for ages 5-12. Applications are being accepted from organizations for the Fall 2008 season.

GOLF

STPGA junior golf programs: The Southern Texas PGA would like to invite junior golfers ages 7-18 to participate in the 2008 STGPA Academy Sports and Outdoors Junior Golf Programs. The programs are as follows

Junior Links Tour: An instructional program for young players (ages 12-18) that may not be ready for 18-hole events.

Bellaire classes: Monthly youth golf classes are offered by the Bellaire Parks and Recreation Department. Sessions cover grip, stroke, stance, putting and more. Call Buster Adams at 713-662-8285 for details.

Parks and Rec program: The Houston Parks and Recreation Department invites boys and girls ages 7-18 to participate in its year-round junior golf program. The program offers a total of eight, two-week sessions of golf instruction at neighborhood parks across the city. Students will receive free equipment and lessons from PGA professionals. Beginner lessons: Pinewood Golf Center offers group and individual golf lessons led by teaching golf professional Gordon Ducoff. The center is off Sam Houston Toll Road.

GYMNASTICS

The Little Gym: A non-competitive, curriculum-based, gymnastics program for children four months to 12 years is being offered in the Champions, Katy, Memorial, Spring and Sugar Land areas. For a free, no-obligation trial class or more information, visit www.thelittlegym.com.

MARTIAL ARTS

Classes: The Sakurambo School of Martial Arts is offering martial arts for youth ages 3 and up at 3000 Blodgett St.

PROGRAMS

Quillian Center: The Quillian Center, a recreational division of First Methodist Church at 10570 Westpark Drive, offers youth sports programs in basketball, baseball (Tee-ball), soccer and flag football. West U summer camps: The City of West University Place Parks and Recreation Department is offering a variety of camp opportunities for ages 2-14 all summer long. Youth can choose from any of the following camp options: Dance Camp, Camp Colonial, Racquet Camp, John Lucas Basketball Camp, Racquet and More Camp, Skyhawks Sports Camps, and Swim Clinic Camp. In addition to the traditional camp offerings, West U Parks and Recreation is also offering a few new camp opportunities this summer, including Adrenaline Rush Camp, Art Exploration Camp, Ikids Computer Camp, and a new Smart Cooking Camp. RUGBY

Wanderers: The Wanderers Rugby Football Club seeks players. Practices, which are open to anyone, are held Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 p.m., rain or shine, at the Westbury High School football field. Cleats and shorts are necessary. Houston Hurricanes play: The Houston Hurricanes play touch rugby Sundays from 3-5 p.m. at the Northwest YMCA, 1234 W. 34th St. The games are played under the Federation of International Touch rules. Tournaments and leagues are also held. Individual players ages 8 and over are welcome; no experience necessary. Training is Mondays from 6-7 p.m.; Saturday games are 10-11 a.m.

High school rugby: Houston Athletic & Rugby Club is accepting registrations. The group is open to boys ages 15-19. No experience is necessary. Call 281-754-4540

SOCCER

FFPS Soccer: Fall Registration for Fun Fair Positive Soccer is now open for the fall for boys and girls, ages 4-18. Games begin Oct. 11. All FFPS games are played locally, and practices are once per week, with a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal playing time, opportunities to play every position, coed/balanced teams, positive coaching and more. No tryouts are required. Founded in 1986, FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater Houston area.

Near Town Soccer registration: Registration is open for youth soccer players interested in playing for the Houston Near Town Soccer Club, which includes recreational West University Soccer and Houston Express Soccer. The Club expects to field approximately 1,800 players on more than 175 teams for the 2008 fall season. Comprehensive programs are available for boys and girls ages 5-18 regardless of experience or playing level, from beginners and recreational players through Division I.

Homeschooler soccer: Kicks Indoor Soccer & Gym, 611 Shepherd Drive, offers a soccer program dedicated to homeschooled youth ages 2-17 every Wednesday. Large family and group discounts are available.

KiCKS KiDS soccer training: Kicks Indoor Soccer offers year-round training for children ages 2-17. Children can walk in for a single class or sign up for any program and start at any time. Every class is age-appropriate, managed by licensed soccer trainers. The full KiCKS KiDS schedule is Mondays from 4-5 p.m. for ages 2-4; Mondays from 5-6 p.m. for ages 7-11; Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. for ages 12-17; Thursdays from 5-6 p.m. for ages 4-6; and Fridays from 9:30-10:30 a.m for ages 2-4. On Mommy & Me Fridays, there is open play on the indoor turf field with other parents and their young ones every Friday afternoon from 4-5:30 p.m. for $5 per child. Finally, there is Friday night open play for adult coed competition from 11 p.m.-1 a.m. for $10 per player.

SOFTBALL

Recreational ball: Girls ages 5-15 can register to play recreational softball at Memorial Ashford. Most games are scheduled for after school at the park located at 12840 Briar Forest. TRACK

Pole vault mini-clinics: Technical and safety instruction for pole vaulters of all ages is offered at 6 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at Rice University track, University Boulevard at Main Street. Instructor is coach David Butler, pole vault coach at Rice and and a member of the development staff for U.S.A. National Pole Vault. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $30 per session.
